Hunter Doherty “Patch” Adams was born on May 28, 1945. Patch is an American physician, comedian, social activist, clown, and author and founder of the Gesundheit! Institute.
I’ll admit I knew when I seen the movie Patch Adams that I knew it was based on a true person but it wasn’t until now that I learned more than what the movie showed me. Patch Adams in the movie was portrayed by one of my favorite actor and comedians, Robin Williams but the real Patch Adams is also a comedian, clown and a medical doctor that decided to see and do things a bit differently. I believe he did just that and I commend him for not being the stuffy only in it for the money doctor that there are an overabundance of.
This first quote is profound about how doctors and humans should not just delay death or their own demise but be mindful and helpful in prolonging the quality of life. Everyone deserves to have a better life and not just a minimum but to be happy and fulfilled.
Patch has some very good philosophies on how to be in life and that’s how I like to live to see what others do not see, experience what others don’t and hear things, feel things be in the moment and see the possibilities. We shouldn’t let fear get in the way or the way we think that we’re supposed to do things (conformity) or be lazy. We need to take more chances to see more out of life.
I think that many doctors or therapists, counselors lose this sense and I get that they try to cross boundaries and I’m not even sure what the rules are for relationships between doctor and patient, I think it depends on the type of doctor. Regardless we’re not just our disease, mental illness, virus whatever it is that we come to you to be treated for, we’re not just a number and while it may be that you have to keep your emotions in check and while sometimes you have the job to tell us the bad news, that we lost the baby, we have cancer, we have Alzheimer’s or other. It isn’t an easy job but you need to be mindful and human towards patients because how would you want to be treated? Ask yourself that when you find yourself questioning how you’re treating someone. If you would want to be treated that way or if you would want a loved one treated that way.
This is perhaps the most important quote of Patch Adams about laughter and being happy and what it does for our bodies to laugh, how it enhances blood flow and improves cardiovascular function and releases endorphins and improves oxygen and so many good things. I think that’s one thing that we all need in life is to find what makes us laugh, what makes us happy because being happy will help keep you healthier and we feel better when we are happier. That’s why I chose Patch Adams during May’s mental health awareness month is so those that are struggling with depression, anxiety, other mental illnesses or physical ailments such as cancer or chronic pain.. Patch wasn’t the first to state that laughter is the best medicine. But here he says more about what laughter and what happiness actually can do for the body. So find your happiness, the joy in life, find a reason to laugh and laugh long and hard and often.
