Being open about therapy and mental illness is something I wish this world would learn. Everyone at some point in their lives needs someone to talk to and no not all of us choose to seek professional help, we talk to our sisters, friends, relatives. The point about it is we talk, we openly discuss and try to get to the heart of the matter so it doesn’t continue to plague us and to improve our lives. I know that therapy, psychotherapy and friendtherapy has done me wonders. Sometimes you just need to talk it out.
Anxiety and depression aren’t exactly the easiest things to be able to hide for most of us. Surely one can cast it aside for short periods to appear fine but if you have things that you’ve gone through in life and have an anxiety disorder or depression it’s only okay for short periods. We do have the power to be able to control our anxiety and depression by using mindfulness and other techniques to help us see or deal with things in a better way.
I think part of the reason for stigma behind mental illness is only in the past maybe 40 years have we started doing new things to help with the mentally ill. They used to institutionalize people for mental illnesses and some still are and there are varying degrees of how much it incapacitates the individual. That doesn’t mean that we should be ashamed of it. I think the more understanding we have of mental illnesses, treating mental illness and looking for alternatives to just medicine and if we become more outspoken it could break down those walls that have been around for so long.
