Nora Ephron Once Said…

Nora Ephron was born on May 19, 1941, and died on June 26, 2012. Nora was an American journalist, writer, and filmmaker. I’ve been a fan of Nora’s screenplays and films throughout her career. She’s been part of some of my favorites including When Harry Met Sally, Sleepless in Seattle, You’ve Got Mail, Michael, Hanging Up and Julie & Julia some of which she co-wrote with her sister Delia Ephron. A little known fact about Nora is that she was an intern at the White House for John F. Kennedy and wrote for the New York Post and Esquire magazine.

Above all else, be the heroine of your life, not the victim. – Nora Ephron

I’d like to say that so far I have been the heroine of my life. I’ve played the part of the victim but have learned to be the heroine from how I became the victim. I think you have to be the victim to learn how to be the heroine or at least it makes it easier to figure out how to overcome the victimization. You get ahead in your life if you overcome fears and stop being the victim and learn how to lead.

Woman are willing to reinvent themselves, and I think that’s one of the secret ways women are luckier than men. – Nora Ephron

As a woman I feel I have tried many things in my life and reinvented myself multiple times and I think we need to in order to make it through hardships but to also help us cope with whatever lives hits us with. I believe that is what Nora was talking about when she said that we are willing to reinvent ourselves. Men often have a more difficult time talking in general and especially about their feelings to try to resolve things that they’ve gone through. There’s a certain stigma placed on men as they are growing up to keep their feelings to themselves because it’s some sign of weakness but I find that when a man opens up about his feelings that it shows strength and courage. To me I feel that it helps me trust men more when they’re willing to do this rather than being closed off or unwilling to open up about themselves.

What are you going to do? Everything, is my guess. It will be a little messy, but embrace the mess. It will be a little complicated, but rejoice in the complications. – Nora Ephron

I think that people get the most out of life if they’re willing to try things, whether it be a new food, a new hobby, a new job, or learning whatever. The more we learn the better off we are and the more chances we take the more we can fail but we can also learn from the failures in life. Life can be messy and sometimes that’s what makes it fun and sometimes that’s what we hate about life but it’s the messes that you get through that make you feel your accomplishments.
