Edward VIII, later Prince Edward, Duke of Windsor (Edward Albert Christian George Andrew Patrick David; was born on June 23, 1894 and died on May 28, 1972. Prince Edward was King of the United Kingdom and the Dominions of the British Empire, and Emperor of India, from 20 January 1936 until his abdication on 11 December of that year. He was succeeded by his brother George VI from 11 December 1936 until his death in 1952 until the current monarch Queen Elizabeth started her reign.
I love reading about history and about royalty since I found out that I’m connected through blood. It made me intrigued and I loved watching the series The Crown on Netflix. Granted I know some of it it probably sensationalized a bit for drama but because they’re working with notable characters there has to be some truth. As for Edward’s statement about being bored with yourself I think many people go through that and when you can connect with someone that you like doing things with it does take the help.
This is one of the sad truths of the monarchy is that since the woman he loved had been married before it was very much frowned upon for Edward to have a union with Wallis Simpson. So he did what his heart told him to and resigned the throne and married the woman he loved. His troubles continued especially because of that decision and so he was limited access to Buckingham Palace and to his niece. I feel it is quite the outdated part of the monarch and what are they going to do now…. when Queen Elizabeth gives up the throne bypass Prince Charles because he’s divorced and remarried?
He was a bit catty or clever with his wit and thought this was amusing that he stated that this is something he could tell Wallis. I hardly doubt (I could be wrong) that he would have won that argument… those are definitely fighting words though. Yes it’s noble or romantic that he gave up the throne but in order to be with her that was the choice he was given that he could do and he was still punished for his choice. I’m just thinking if Wallis and Edward fought I highly doubt this would be uttered from his mouth. I think he loved her too much to state this in any context of sincerity to her. But the press does love to take words out of context to get ratings. We have enough drama in life without the little lies don’t we? And sometimes they aren’t little lies. Be good reporters and tell the truth. Sure your ratings won’t be so high but maybe things wouldn’t be so sensationalized or dramatized and maybe we’d get more done.
I chose Edward because of his willingness to give up being King to have the love he wanted. I don’t know if many men would do this. Prince Charles of course did marry Princess Diana but then they divorced and he’s remarried and as I said before I’m not sure what that does for the crown and what it means if they’ll bypass Charles for William or if Charles will be King.
