Barry Manilow Once Said…

Barry Manilow was born Barry Alan Pincus on June 17, 1943. Barry is an American singer-songwriter, arranger, musician, producer, and actor. My friend Steve Yang who passed away almost two years ago was a fan of Barry Manilow and I believe he would have appreciated me honoring Barry on Barry’s birthday. So I honor my friend Steve and Barry with today.

One good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain. – Barry Manilow

I could not agree more with this quote from Barry, I have turned to music many times in my life to help me get through difficult times. While some music has moved me to tears and others have energized me on my walks or there’s just the song you need to turn up to sing along with because you know all the lyrics. I think some people think that it’s the music that brings you pain but it’s the association to the song or what it reminds you of or what you’re dealing with that is the source of the pain not the music itself. I have found music to be very healing for me in my lifetime.

Everything you say and do is having an impact on others. – Barry Manilow

I believe I am understanding more why my friend Steve was a fan of Barry. This second quote also resonates with me and should with everyone because it is oh so true that everything you say and do can impact others. Some people may not be personally affected by something you do or say but someone can so that is why you need to be kind, be respectful to one another and don’t violate someone’s personal boundaries, don’t vandalize or steal from someone else’s place or property. There really is no excuse for the vandalism and fires and looting that has occurred recently during the protesting that stemmed from George Floyd being killed in Minneapolis, Minnesota from a police officer while he was under arrest. The cop went too far and the cop murdered George but that doesn’t give you permission to torch his house, graffiti the police station, vandalize a Macy’s in Chicago and loot entire contents out of stores. That is unacceptable and while the police officer that killed George and the bystanders should be held accountable for their actions, the people vandalizing and looting and setting fires should also be held accountable for their actions.

I believe that we are who we choose to be. Nobody is going to come and save you. You’ve got to save yourself. Nobody is going to give you anything. You’ve got to go out and fight for it. – Barry Manilow

I believe that Barry being a good songwriter also made him a good writer and person with knowledge and influence to affect others. It was very easy to pick quotes from Barry that I felt resonated with how I feel and my own beliefs. I do believe that we are who we choose to be and no one is going to save you but yourself and you should fight for what you want. That is the key to life is being yourself, going out and being who you want to be and fighting for what you want. I’m not talking literally hurting anyone but pushing yourself and what you feel is your limits to do better to seek to improve to impact people and influence people. People can make a difference in other people’s lives, you just have to go out and do it.

When the Good Times Come Again – Barry Manilow

I chose this song because I feel it’s very poignant for what we’re all dealing with the corona virus pandemic and having to stay at home and the recent protesting. A fan of Barry Manilow put together the video with lyrics and images and I thought it was very beautiful.
