This is a wise statement that we shouldn’t be afraid to admit when we’re wrong. So many people in life struggle with admitting when they’ve made a mistake but it is from those mistakes that we learn new things. We learn by opening ourselves up to admitting our shortcomings, faults and trying different things. If at first you don’t succeed than try try again.
One of my favorite movies has been, ‘Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind’ where Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet are the main characters and they go to this doctor to have their memories of each other erased. Who hasn’t from one time or another thought how great it would be to have a traumatic memory erased, I know I have. I would love to not be haunted by memories of Dexter being beaten and strangled to death. I would love not finding him dead under my bed. I’d love to not watch the light leave Luna’s eyes as I held her in my arms. I’d love to not feel his hands around my throat. I’d love to not feel being raped. Does it occur everyday? No but the body keeps the score for traumatic memory and it remembers. They’re burned into our psyche and they make it hard to sleep and hard to dream and hard to cope at times. These aren’t things you can just turn off on a whim and it’s not so easy. Yes I have outlets of writing and my art and I have support groups and therapy but it takes time and patience and work to figure out how to make these part of your lives.
I think these quotes should and could and are today tied together. One should admit when they’re wrong and learn from it. I know I learned from experiencing Luna, Dexter, his hands, the rape and many other things that these are things I do not like and do not enjoy so instead of burying them I’ve met them face on. I’ve had the courage to live, to continue, to learn and live. To error is human and I think forgiveness would be nice. When it is possible for one to do I think it helps us with our relationships. Many people are incapable of forgiveness and or say they can but when they remind us of what we’ve done is it really forgiveness? Or a cruel reminder of a past event where we were wrong. I’m not saying forget but I think forgiveness is the ability to more than just co-exist but start anew. At least healthy relationships don’t drudge up things or keep tabs. You work on things when you want things to work. You let them know they’re special and important and that you don’t want to live without them. Show them that you see and love them and aren’t just waiting to recycle you into the abyss.
