Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni or simply Michelangelo was born on 6 March 1475 and died 18 February 1564. Michelangelo is known best as an Italian sculptor, painter, architect and poet of the High Renaissance born in the Republic of Florence.
I chose multiple quotes from Michelangelo, “If people knew how hard I work to gain mastery, it wouldn’t seem wonderful at all.” This struck me because as an artist and writer and just human we are so self critical but we also know how much effort we put into things we do. I believe this is what Michelangelo is pointing out with this quote.
Michelangelo, “I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free”. One can take this literal since he was a sculpture that likely be already had an idea or he’d see the block of marble and just carved until he felt it was perfect. But I think artists do this with whatever medium. Drawing you look at a blank canvas and start painting or drawing and you know the point you look at it that you have it which is the setting yourself free to do more.
The third quote, “The greatest danger for most of us is not that our aim is too high and we miss it, but that it is too low and we reach it.” I think Michelangelo was right we push ourselves sometimes to our breaking point and undoubtedly we don’t reach it. I’m not saying you can’t aim high or have high standards but we have to know what we can do and adjust accordingly.
